ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Winona State track and field team completed the Viking Olympics by winning five more events on day two and finishing with the team title Saturday in Rock Island, Illinois.
WSU earned 423 points to nearly double up second place Northern Michigan, who finished with 213 points. Host Augustana (Ill.) finished third with 172 points.
The Warriors finished one-two in the 400-meter dash with junior Megan Seidl finishing first with a time of 58.24 and sophomore Brittany Schyvinck finishing right behind at 1:00.89.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Hailey Deschaine, Tamika Tucker, Schyvinck and Seidl took home the top spot with a time of 49.90. WSU also won the 4x400-meter relay, with Seidl, Bagley, Ali Skluzacek and Schyvinck finishing at 4:00.06.
Senior Katie Bagley earned a narrow win in a tightly-contested 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.38, edging out Michigan Tech's Liz Bloch, who finished at 2:25.62.
The Warriors went one-two-three in the shot put, as Kaitlyn Long earned the win with a toss of 46' 9", a personal record for the sophomore and the fourth-best mark in team history. Ashley Thooft was second with a throw of 42' 11 ¾", while Heather Buckler threw 42' 2 ¾".
Thooft also finished second in the discus throw with a heave of 139' 9". Thooft finished behind only Alissa Rausch – last season's discus national champion for WSU – who competed unattached as an individual.
Deschaine won the long jump with a jump of 18' 1 ¾", while Amanda Schaefer and Haley Reinke tied for second in the high jump with leaps of 5' 1".
Olivia Fixsen took second in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing in 15.70. In the 400-meter hurdles, Kari Schneiss, Taylor Vogel and Karina Elford finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Schneiss' time is the sixth-best in program history.
Andrea Bartz picked up a second place finish in the tripel jump at 37' 2 ½", while Reinke finished third at 34' 8 ½".
Heidi Hujik earned a third place finish in the 5000-meter run, missing out on second place by just a second with a time of 19:28.27.
The Warriors head to Maryville, Missouri next Friday and Saturday for the NSIC vs. MIAA competition hosted by Northwest Missouri State.
