All-conference football in 1950
Pitched the first ever no-hitter at Winona State
Andy Swota was one of a number outstanding athletics to enroll at Winona State after World War II. He was a standout in four sports – football, basketball, baseball and track. He earned first-team all-conference football honors as a halfback in 1950. In basketball, he scored 227 career points. Baseball is regarded as his “best” sport. During his four years, the left-hander compiled a 15-2 mark as a pitcher, posting a remarkable 1.98 earned run average. As a freshman, his 1.47 ERA is still among Winona State’s all-time best marks. He also recorded the school’s first ever no-hitter that year, beating Westminster, Missouri, 11-1 on April 14th, 1949, at Gabrych Park. When he wasn’t pitching, Swota played first base. He finished with a career .295 battering average. In 49 career games, he had 33 hits, including three doubles and a triple and drove in 18 runs.
After earning his degree, Swota wet on to play professional baseball in Huron, South Dakota. He later taught and coached at Dakota Wesleyan College, Cedar Falls, Iowa College and high schools in Hudson, Iowa, Huron South Dakota, Tucson Arizona and Monroe Wisconsin. Following his retirement, the Swota family returned to South Dakota.
