Served as a WSU student athletic director

Barbara Knutson participated in several intramural sports during her four years at WSU before the formal organization of intercollegiate athletics for women. These included swimming, volleyball, basketball, tennis and track and field. She was also named Winona State student athletic director.

Knutson went on to help develop girls athletic programs at Winona Senior High School and Mankato Senior High School. Later, she served as the girls sports director and physical education department chairperson at Mankato West High School.

She held several elected positions in the Minnesota High School Coaches Association: president elect (1986-88), president (1988-90), past president (1990-92), volleyball board of control (1984-87), and Big Nine Conference volleyball secretary (1982-86). Knutson also served with the Minnesota State High School League as a representative from the Girls Coaches Association (1990-91) along with a number of MSHL committees.
