Barbara L. Ward-Miller was a pioneer of women’s golf both at Winona State University and in the Winona community.

After playing for a number of years on the boys’ high school team at Winona Senior High School, before the girls’ team was organized, Ward-Miller came to Winona State and turned in a brilliant career in the early years of golf at WSU.

Ward-Miller chose to come to Winona State because she saw the potential in the women’s golf program, and she wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father, a prominent golfer in Winona and the surrounding area.

Her decision provided benefits for the Warrior golf program, as Wald-Miller never finished out of the top five in any of the golf tournaments she participated in during her final three years as a Warrior.

At the end of her four-year career at WSU, Ward-Miller and her teammates matched the height of their hard work by winning the team championship in the MWCGA state championship, an event that she was a medalist in. That also highlighted a career in which she scored co-medalist honors in the 1982-83 MAIAW state tournament and earned all-state honors in the 1984-85 season.

Over the years, Ward-Miller has been involved in many volunteer services but finds that the hardest job she has had is staying home raising her children.
