Trying to pick the “Best of the Best” can be a very subjective task, but one would not find many faults in naming Brian J. Paulson one of the “Best of the Best” golfers ever to play at Winona State University.
Paulson, a Winona native, came to Winona State University and helped the Warrior golf program to one of the most successful eras in its history.
During his collegiate career, Paulson made his mark both for Winona State and himself, as he helped the Warriors to a number of meet championships. But it was the conference, regional and national levels that Paulson and the Warriors had a huge impact.
Paulson and the Warriors played in six different national championships including both the NAIA and NCAA national championships in the same years of 1993 and 1994.
The Warriors also were a dominant force in conference play, winning four consecutive championships with Paulson grabbing medalist honors once, runner up status twice and placing third once in those events.
Overall, Paulson earned All-America, All-District and All-Conference honors four times and became the only golfer to attain Hall of Fame honors in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Paulson was also successful off the golf course, as he earned scholar All-America honors twice and held first- trumpet status for the Winona State symphonic wind ensemble and Jazz pep bands as an undergraduate.
After his collegiate career, Paulson continued his golf career as a professional golfer on various mini-tours. He also turned his attention to the golfing industry as an assistant golf professional at a number of Winona area golf clubs.
Paulson continues to promote and aid the Warrior program as an assistant coach for the men’s team.
