If there ever was a heavyweight among athletes at Winona State University Daniel Malm was literally a two-sport heavyweight.
Malm was a standout offensive lineman among the men on the Warrior football team, starting every game in his four-year career, and he wrestled at the heavyweight position, going on to a standout career.
|
The wrestling exploits of Malm were outstanding, as he reached All-America status twice, All-Conference three times and twice captured the league title in the heavyweight bracket of the conference championships. Malm also competed in the NAIA national championships twice and added to his credits when he wrestled against the Polish national team.
Malm later furthered his wrestling career by participating in the Circuit for Professional Wrestling from 1984 to 1989, wrestling against the Russian national team. He added to his athletic career as competitive powerlifter from 1979 through 1984. He earned two Illinois state powerlifting championships and placed in many tournaments as a heavyweight member of the Mayor Daley Wrestling Club.
The football program at Winona State was rebuilding during Malm’s stay, but that did not stop him from garnering NAIA All-District 13 honors once and All-Conference honors in back-to-back seasons.
Outside of his athletic career, Malm was an active Chamber of Commerce member, spoke as a youth motivational speaker, was instrumental in organizing food drives to feed approximately 150 families for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter, and was a fund-raiser for the special Olympics, cancer research and family rehabilitation facilities.
Malm also has helped with the placing of Winona State engineering students.
He is truly a heavyweight among Warrior alumni.
