If there ever was an individual suited to the name “Happy Warrior” it was Dwight H. Marston. His tenure at Winona State University covered 25 years during which he served as athletic director, head men’s golf coach and professor in the Heath, Physical Education and Recreation Department.

Winona State University became a known quantity throughout the nation because of Marston’s athletic committee efforts. He was chairman of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District, chaired the NAIA District 13 golf coaches and the National Collegiate Athletic Association District IV golf coaches.

Marston also played an instrumental role in the development and success of the Warrior Men’s golf program. He helped direct WSU teams to nine national tournaments from 1985-1994. Warrior teams won conference championships from 1991-1994 and NAIA District 13 championships in 1984 and 1992 through 1994. Those efforts earned for Marston conference coach of the year honors five times, NAIA District 13 coach of the year honor four times and NCAA Division II District IV coach of the year honors twice.

Marston began his higher education career at Carthage College, Wis. In 1956, moved to Hastings College, Neb. In 1961 and then arrived at Winona State in 1966.

Marston also served in the United States Army and was active in a number of civic and church organizations throughout his lifetime.

Marston passed away on February 20, 2003.
