Winona State University Athletics

Everett Johnson starred on the 1925 undefeated conference championship football team, was an all-conference player and was the first person in the history of intercollegiate athletics at Winona State to be named an assistant coach.  As assistant to coach Galligan, he helped guide the Warrior football team to another undefeated conference championship in 1928.  In four seasons, Ev’s football teams compiled an impressive 17-7-3 record, including the two undefeated conference championship seasons, 1925 and 1928.  He played equally well as a running back, blocking back, and end, and scored many of his team’s points-after-touchdown.

As a defensive guard in basketball, Ev helped the Warriors to win many games in the three years he played.  He was an assistant coach for the 1928-29 undefeated conference championship basketball team. 

Ev was president of his junior and senior class, was active in Die-No-Mo as a charter member, Wenonah Players, debate, Annual Staff, Men’s Club, Representative Council, and other campus organizations.  He was president of the “W” club and was named Winona State’s Representative Man in 1928.

He was coach and athletic director at Monroe, Wis. High School for four years.  One of his basketball teams there won fifth place honors at the Wisconsin Tournament. 

Dr. Johnson graduated from the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1936 with his D.D.S. degree and practiced dentistry for forty years, retiring in 1976.  He has been president of the Wisconsin State Dental Club, a member of the Madison, Wis. Chamber of Commerce, a dental examiner for military recruits and a cub scout leader.
