George Benedict was in the midst of an outstanding career at Winona State when he volunteered to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Benedict led the Warriors to a NSC football title in 1964 and a conference crown in baseball in 1965. He left Winona State to join the US Army in 1966 and served two tours in Vietnam. Benedict was awarded The Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver and one Bronze Service Star, Vietnam Campaign Medal, The National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Rifle Qualification Badge, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. Sergeant Benedict returned to Winona State in the Fall of 1969 to continued his education and participate in football and baseball until his graduation in 1971.
