Steve L. Speer is called “Chucker” and there is a good reason for that because during his collegiate football career at Winona State University no Warrior fan had ever seen the likes of passing the ball like Speer did.
In each of his three varsity years, Speer threw more than 300 passes a year and still holds the WSU career record with 1,197 attempts. Those passes often found their mark as Speer completed over 130 passes in each varsity season and also holds the WSU career record for completions with 498.
Speer’s passing exploits led to huge numbers. In the 1982 game with Northern State University, Speer put the ball in the air 56 times and completed 26 of those passes for 309 yards. On a single season basis, Speer threw for over 2,000 yards in 1982 and 1983 and still ranks second in WSU career passing yards with 6,416 yards, and in total offense with 6,255. Of course the object is to score and that Speer’s passing was able to accomplish, as he finished with 39 career touchdown passes.
The passing highlights helped Speer lead the Warriors to a conference championship in 1983 and he led the conference in total offense and passing yards in 1982.
Passing yards can really chew up the Real Estate and that proved to be a skill well learned by Speer, who is a Real Estate broker.
