Wayne Kannel was Winona State’s top basketball scorer in 1943, 1946 and 1947, tied for the conference scoring lead in 1943, was the conference-scoring leader in 1946, and was runner-up in 1947.
Using strong defensive play at first base and outstanding hitting ability, Wayne was a star baseball player all four years at Winona State.
Wayne’s college career was interrupted from 1943 to 1946 for service to his country during World War II. He served as an ambulance driver while on duty with the U.S. Army Medical Corps in the European Theatre.
As a Winona State student, Wayne was active on the Intramural Board, P.E. Club, Newman Club, Representative Council, Winonan, Wenonah and “W” Club where he served as president during his senior year.
From 1947 to 1962 Wayne was a teacher, coach and school administrator at Alma, Wis., High School. His basketball teams won three conference championships and from 1947 to 1950 his basketball teams compiled a 65-7 win-loss record.
He served as superintendent at Alma schools and then moved on to Greenfield, Wis. High School in 1972 where he taught history, ecology, and world affairs, and served as chair of the social studies department. He also coached the academic decathlon team at Greenfield, and his Model United Nations Team participated in the Wisconsin Model UN program.
Wayne retired in 1985 after nearly forty years of dedicated service as a teacher, coach and administrator. He was Greenfield’s Teacher of the Year and was nominated for Wisconsin Teacher of the Year in 1980.
