WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team capped off a perfect nonconference schedule with a 78-53 win over Viterbo University Tuesday night in McCown Gym.
Sophomore Tara Roelofs scored a team-high 17 points in just 16 minutes of action, including 14 in the first half.
The Warriors stormed out to a quick 10-1 lead capped off by a pair of Roelofs jumpers. Roelofs later capped off another run, this time an 11-0 advantage to push the WSU lead to 32-19 with 6:31 to play. A Kali Hackmann 3-pointer with a minute to play gave the Warriors a 20-point cushion at 46-26 heading into halftime.
The Warriors shot 47 percent in the opening period while the V-Hawks shot 44 percent. WSU sank five of its 10 shots from behind the arc and outrebounded Viterbo 23-12 – including 12-2 offensively. Winona State forced 11 first half turnovers while only committing four of its own.
A 10-2 run to start the half doubled up the V-Hawks with a 56-28 lead and cruised to the 78-53 victory.
Roelofs finished 7-of-10 from the field while hitting a pair of 3-pointers for her team-high 17 points. A trio of Warriors finished in double figures, as Hackmann finished 4-of-8 for 11 points and Kayla Timmerman made five of her eight looks for 10 points.
Connor Nagle led the defense with four assists and three steals while Jenny Weiland grabbed eight rebounds and dished out two assists. The Warriors for the game out rebounded the V-Hawks 52-33 and had just 10 turnovers.
Winona State (4-0) opens conference play Saturday when it welcomes Upper Iowa to McCown Gym for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
