Warriors Fall To Iowa State In Final Exhibition Test

AMES, Iowa – The Winona State women's basketball team closed out exhibition play with a 64-29 loss to Division I Iowa State Sunday afternoon in front of 9,556 spectators at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

Winona State struggled to find the basket in the opening eight minutes, going just 1-of-12 from the field to start the game as the Cyclones built a 20-4 lead by the 12 minute media timeout.

After a Fallon Ellis layup for ISU made it 27-4, the Warriors finally found their offensive rhythm, going on an impressive 10-0 run over the span of nearly six minutes to close the gap to 27-14. The Cyclones countered with another run of their own, however, closing the half on a 10-4 run to go into the half up 37-18.

The Warriors shot 28 percent in the first half on 8-of-29 shooting, while Iowa State shot 43 percent while making 15 of 35 shots. WSU was unable to find their long range touch, going 0-for-10 from beyond the arc while the Cyclones sank six of their 11 shots from distance.

The Cyclones came out of the break on an 8-0 run and four of their first seven shots while the Warriors went 0-for-6 to trail 47-20 with 15:03 to play.

MaKena Panning hit a 3-point shot with 4:51 to play to break the Warrior drought from long range, but would be the only one the Warriors hit in the game as WSU managed just 11 second-half points against a stingy Cyclone defense.

Kayla Timmerman led the Warriors with eight points while accumulating five rebounds, two blocks and three steals. Hannah McGlone added six points with a team-high nine rebounds – including four offensive boards.

For the game, the Warriors shot 21 percent (12-of-58) while making just one of its 21 attempts from long range.

Winona State begins its season Friday night when it hosts Crown College at 6 p.m. in McCown Gym.
