Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Long Ball Leads Warriors To 75-56 Win Over Golden Bears

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team washed away its recent shooting woes, draining 15 3-point baskets in a 75-56 victory over Concordia-St. Paul Friday evening in front of 1,121 fans inside McCown Gym.

Five Warriors hit multiple 3-point baskets – including four in the first half from Corey Jeffs. Tim Wagner hit three, and Riley Bambenek, Mark Blacklock and Conrad Masberg each knocked down a pair to provide a potent long-range attack. In all, the Warriors made as many shots from behind the arc as the Golden Bears attempted, hitting 15 of 34 shots from downtown, while Concordia made just three of their 15 tries.

It appeared early on as though the Warriors' cold shooting may continue, as the Warriors were held scoreless for more than five minutes to start the game as CU opened up a 7-0 lead until a Wagner 3-pointer got the Warriors on the board with 14:37 to play. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Jeffs eventually tied the game at 11-11 and another 3-pointer – this time by Conrad Masberg – gave WSU its first lead at 14-13.

Concordia opened up another six point lead at 20-14, but an ensuing 19-6 WSU run was capped off by Jeffs' fourth 3-pointer of the half to put the Warriors out in front 33-26 with 2:31 to play in the half and led 35-31 at the break. WSU capitalized on Golden Bear miscues, outscoring CU 12-0 off turnovers.

The Warriors were even hotter in the second half, shooting 57 percent compared to the Golden Bears' 32 percent. WSU opened up the half on a 12-2 run capped off by a Wagner 3-pointer to open up a 47-33 lead less than three minutes into the period. The Golden Bears would cut it to a six-point game on a Shea Mandli jumper with 12:23 to play, but would never get any closer as a Bambenek 3-pointer brought it back to double-digits with 10:34 to play and held the lead until a Nick Arenz triple with 29 seconds left gave the Warriors their largest lead of the day – the game's final score of 75-56.

Isaiah Gray led the Warriors in scoring with 15 points while making his second start of the season. Gray was 7-of-14 from the field while snatching seven rebounds and dishing out four assists. Jeffs finished with a career-high 12 points on the strength of his four 3-pointers and also recorded a pair of assists. Kyle Bauman was the third Warrior in double figures, finishing with 10 points.

Riley Bambenek dished out a game-high seven assists and grabbed five rebounds. The Warriors – which lead the NSIC in blocked shots – recorded eight in the game, including three from Blacklock, two apiece from Bauman and Mohamed Ali Ben Ammar and one from Nick Arenz.

The Warriors shot 48 percent for the game, while Concordia was held to 36 percent.

Winona State (5-3, 2-2 NSIC) has a quick turnaround to prepare for a rivalry matchup when it hosts No. 11 Minnesota State at 6 p.m. Saturday evening inside McCown Gym.
