WINONA, Minn. – The trio of
Tara Roelofs,
Connor Nagle and
Alexis Foley combined to score 56 points as the Winona State women's basketball team put together a statement win with a 73-62 victory over Minnesota State Saturday in McCown Gym.
Roelofs assembled her second straight 20-point game, finishing with 21 points on 8-of-17 shooting while draining three 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. Nagle added 19 points on 6-of-11 shooting while also sinking a trio of 3-pointers with five rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Foley contributed 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting while dishing out a game-high seven assists and going perfect from the charity stripe at 6-for-6.
The Warriors jumped out to an 11-4 lead in under four minutes after a 3-pointer by
Tara Roelofs and a step-back jumper by
Connor Nagle.
After the Mavericks stormed back and took a lead, Nagle sank a 3-point shot that squared the two teams at 25-25 with 5:51 to play and Roelofs later hit her second 3-pointer of the half to put WSU back up in front 31-30 but Minnesota State would claim a 33-32 halftime lead.
Roelofs led the Warriors with 10 points at the half, but the Warriors struggled to contain MSU's Lexie Ulfers, who led all scorers with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting.
The Warriors went from good to great in the second half, shooting 48 percent from the field. Roelofs hit her third 3-ball of the half to tie the game at 37-37 early in the second period.
Emily Wirth hit a pair of free throws that gave WSU a 39-37 lead with 15:33, a lead the Warriors would not relinquish.
Foley hit a 3-pointer with 13:31 to play to give 42-39 lead, then a Roelofs jumper followed by a
Connor Nagle 3-pointer concluded an 8-0 run to put WSU up 47-39 with 12:31 to play. MSU then followed with a 6-0 run to close the gap to 49-45.
With 9:19 to play, Nagle buried a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer to open up a 54-45 advantage, which was at the time the largest lead of the game. Senior Caitie Zepzyk converted on a layup on the next possession to push the lead to double digits at 56-45 with 8:39 to play.
Kayla Timmerman got in on the action with a turn-around jumper – again at the shot clock buzzer to make it a 62-50 lead with 5:01 to play and less than a minute later Foleyy rattled home a 3-pointer for an insurmountable 15-point lead, 65-50. A late 7-0 run by the Mavericks cut it to 67-60 with 1:35 to play, but perfect free throw shooting sealed the 73-62 win. The Warriors were a flawless 14-for-14 from the charity stripe, while the Mavericks also were a perfect 8-for-8.
WSU swatted seven shots in the game, including six blocks from Timmerman – who also pulled down seven rebounds and had six points.
Winona State (8-1, 4-1 NSIC) prepares for its final game of 2014 next Saturday when it travels to Upper Iowa to face the Peacocks for the second time this year at 4 p.m. in Fayette.
