SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Kayla Timmerman recorded the first double-double of the season for the Winona State women's basketball team, but it wasn't enough as a hot-shooting Sioux Falls team rolled to an 82-65 victory Saturday afternoon at the Stewart Center.
The sophomore transfer from the University of Iowa put together her best game of the season, finishing with 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting and 10 rebounds – much of which came in an impressive first half to keep the Warriors in the game.
The loss was the first of the season for the Warriors, who fall to 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in league play.
Timmerman had eight of the Warriors' first 10 points to keep the Warriors even at a 10-10 score with 13:08 to play in the half, but the Cougars would go on a 10-0 run to take a 20-10 lead with 9:53 to play.
By the 6:54 mark, Timmerman had 14 of the Warriors' 18 points, but USF was in the midst of another run and opened up a 31-18 lead by the five-minute media timeout.
Kayla Timmerman earned the label of go-to player, scoring 16 first-half points – already a career high by that point – with six rebounds and a block on 8-of-13 shooting. Aside from Timmerman, the Warriors were just 5-of-21 and as a team and they went into the locker room shooting 38 percent while the Cougars shot 44 percent. USF made five of nine 3-pointers while the Warriors were 2-of-8 from long range.
The Warriors struggled on the glass in the opening half, getting outrebounded by a 25-15 margin.
Timmerman started the second half much the same way she did in the first half, scoring six more points by the 13 minute mark to give her 22 points, but that's all the scoring she would manage for the rest of the game as the Warriors were unable to get back into the game. The Cougars extended their lead until the eventual 82-65 final score.
Hannah McGlone finished with eight rebounds and a pair of assists, while Connor Nagle scored 12 points with three assists and a steal.
The Warriors were just 3-of-17 from long range for the game and shot 38 percent from the floor as a team while the Cougars shot 46 percent.
Winona State (6-1, 2-1 NSIC) returns to McCown Gymnasium next weekend for a pair of games against Concordia-St. Paul on Friday and Minnesota State on Saturday.
