Four Warriors Reach Double Figures In 94-68 Win Over Marauders

WINONA, Minn. – Four Warriors scored in double figures to lead a balanced attack as the Winona State men's basketball team posted a season-high point total in a 94-68 victory over the University of Mary Friday in front of 1,412 fans in McCown Gym.

Redshirt freshman Corey Jeffs reached the 20-point plateau for the second time in three games, scoring a game-high 20 on the strength of 6-of-11 shooting and 3-of-5 from long range. Conrad Masberg tied a career high with 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting and a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. Riley Bambenek added 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Tim Wagner scored a career-high 13 points while dishing out a career-best four assists.

The Warriors, despite having the game well in-hand for the majority of the game, had to dig out of an early hole. Bambenek hit a 3-point shot to give WSU a 5-2 lead, but U-Mary quickly went on an ensuing 18-4 run to race out to a 20-9 lead with 12:17 to play thanks to hitting 4-of-6 shots from long range to start the game. The Warriors would quickly, yet methodically, take control from that point forward, going on a long 33-9 spurt spanning the remainder of the half. Nick Arenz hit a 3-pointer to make it 20-14 off a slick behind-the-back assist from Jeffs, then an Isaiah Gray jumper and a Tim Wagner triple pulled the Warriors to within one at 20-19 thanks to a 10-0 run. The run would increase to as much as 14 unanswered, and then a Bambenek 3-point play made it a 26-22 score and a 17-2 run.

After a Masberg 3-pointer, then back-to-back fast break steals and layups from Wagner and Masberg, followed by one more jumper from Bambenek, the lead had stretched to 39-25 on the strength of an impressive 30-5 run before ending the half up 42-29.

The hot-shooting Warriors hit 15 of 27 shots in the first half (55.6 percent) and 4 of 8 from long range, while the Marauders were held to just 39.3 percent shooting.

Corey Jeffs – for the second time in three games – got hot in the second half, scoring 17 points to help the Warriors increase their cushion. Masberg hit a 3-pointer to kick off the final 20 minutes, then the combo of Mark Blacklock and Masberg hit back-to-back shots from long range to make the score 55-41 with 13:16 to play. A few minutes later, Wagner hit back-to-back threes to push the lead to 68-49 and put the game well out of reach. Jeffs eventually hit his second 3-pointer of the game with 4:53 left as the lead reached 82-57 and the lead eventually grew to as much as 28 with just over a minute to play as the Warriors cruised to the 94-68 victory and a winning record on the year.

WSU finished the game shooting 55.7 percent while the Marauders shot just 42.6 percent. The Warriors claimed an advantage in rebounding, 37-28, for the first time in seven games. Winona State also committed just 10 turnovers while forcing 16 Mary miscues. The WSU defense was efficient in more ways than one, recording a season-high 13 steals led by Masberg's four, tying a career high for the junior.

All nine Warriors that saw action scored and played at least 16 minutes.

Winona State (8-7, 5-6 NSIC) finishes off its four-game homestand when it takes on Minot State at 6 p.m. Saturday in McCown Gym.
