Foley, Timmerman Lead Warriors To 52-47 Win Over Minot State

WINONA, Minn. – Alexis Foley led all scorers with 17 points and Kayla Timmerman recorded her second straight double-double as the Winona State women's basketball team beat Minot State 52-47 Saturday in front of 1,017 fans in McCown Gym.

With the WSU victory and a Minnesota State loss to Minnesota Crookston, the Warriors now sit in a three-way tie atop the NSIC South Division, but it wasn't easy as the Warriors were outshot by their opponent for the third straight game.

The early struggles continued for the Warriors, missing their first seven shots from the field before Alexis Foley hit a jumper with 14:21 to play, but a Christina Boag jumper followed to put Minot State up 10-3. Emily Wirth hit the Warriors' first 3-pointer of the day at the 11-minute mark to make it a 12-6 game, then shortly after Foley hit a 3-pointer of her own to cut make it 15-9.

The Warriors would chip into the lead as Kayla Timmerman came up with an offensive rebound and then converted a 3-point play to cut the Beaver lead to just one point at 17-16 with 5:43 to play. The Warriors would thrive yet again on the 3-point play, as Nagle drove to the basket and was fouled, converting her ensuing free throw to tie the game at 21-21 with 1:04 to play. Caitie Zepczyk then put in a buzzer-beating layup to give the Warriors their first lead of the game at 23-21.

Foley led all scorers at the break with seven points on 2-of-6 shooting, but as a team the Warriors shot just 32 percent (8-of-25) compared to the Beavers' 38.5 percent (10-of-26). WSU committed just three turnovers while the Beavers turned it over six times.

The Warriors opened the second half on a 5-0 run to open up a 28-21 lead, but the lead wouldn't last as Minot State would tie it up at 34-34 on a jumper by Diondra Denton and took the lead back with 6:03 to play on a Savana Kingsbury 3-pointer to put the Beavers up 41-39. The Beavers would run the lead to four on a pair of occasions at 43-39 and 45-41 with 4:08 to play, but WSU countered with a 10-0 run and an 11-2 run over the remainder of the game. Foley tied up the game at 45-45 with a layup, then in the midst of three straight Minot State turnovers, Kayla Timmerman put the Warriors up for the last time with a friendly bounce on a jumper with 1:35 to play. After a pair of free throws by Nagle and Tara Roelofs, the Warriors had taken a 51-45 lead and held on for the 52-47 final.

The Warriors finished the game shooting just 32.7 percent from the field while the Beavers shot 40.4 percent. The Warriors were efficient from the charity stripe, however, making 16 of 19 free throws while the Beavers were just 4-of-10 from the line.

Timmerman was 5-of-8 from the field while scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. She also recorded two blocks and two steals. Nagle was the third Warrior to finish in double figures, scoring 11 points along with three assists and a steal.

Winona State (13-3, 9-3 NSIC) heads back on the road next weekend when it takes on Augustana at 6 p.m. Friday before taking on Wayne State at 4 p.m. Saturday.
