ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Winona State men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Northern State squad Friday night, falling 74-51 to the Wolves in Aberdeen.
Isaiah Gray (15) and
Riley Bambenek (14) combined for 29 points, but no other Warrior scored more than five points as WSU was held to its lowest point total of the season.
Northern State made 13 of its 25 attempts from 3-point range (52 percent) while Winona State hit just three of its 20 attempts from long range. From the field the Wolves shot 47 percent while WSU shot 35 percent.
Tim Wagner got things started for the Warriors, drilling a 3-pointer on their opening possession to put WSU out in front and Bambenek later followed with a basket to give the Warriors a 5-4 lead, but that would prove to be the last time WSU held the lead, as an 8-2 NSU run put the Wolves up 12-7. WSU would tie it at 12-12, but the Wolves went on an ensuing 10-0 run to go up 22-12 with 9:07 to play. The Warriors again answered clawing back with a 9-0 run to make it 22-21, but another 12-2 run for the Wolves – capped off with a 3-pointer by Spencer Pankonin at the buzzer – closed the half with a 34-24 lead.
A Gray layup with 17:35 to play brought the Warriors to within seven at 38-31, but back-to-back 3-pointers from the Wolves made it 44-31 and would lead by double digits the rest of the way, eventually opening up a 25 point lead before the eventual 74-51 final score.
Gray added a team-high five rebounds to his 15 points and also accumulated two steals and two assists, while
Mark Blacklock,
Conrad Masberg and
Nick Arenz also each had two steals.
Winona State (5-6, 2-5 NSIC) will look to snap a three-game losing skid when it takes on MSU Moorhead at 6 p.m. Saturday in Moorhead.
