SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Winona State men's basketball team fell to No. 6 Augustana 97-68 Friday night inside Sioux Falls Arena.
The Vikings, who pushed their winning streak to a league-best 11 games, shot lights out from long range, hitting a season-high 17 3-pointers on 29 attempts (58.6 percent) while shooting 57.6 percent from the field overall. The Warriors, meanwhile, hit 8-of-23 shots from downtown (34.8 percent) while shooting just 36.4 percent from the field overall.
The Warriors initially started out strong, taking a quick 4-0 lead on layups by Mark Blacklock and Isaiah Gray and took their largest lead of the game at 9-4 when Riley Bambenek hit a 3-pointer less than three minutes into the game, but a Casey Schilling 3-pointer gave Augie its first lead at 14-12 with 14:06 to play and the Vikings would never look back as a 10-0 run made it 21-12 with 11:47 to play. The run would extend to 18-3 as another Schilling 3-pointer made it 29-15 Vikings with under eight to play as the Vikings cruised to a 51-30 halftime lead as the Vikings shot an absurd 10-of-13 from 3-point range (76.9 percent) in the opening 20 minutes.
WSU wouldn't fare much better in the second half, as Augustana outscored the Warriors 46-38 while posting the highest point total the Warriors have allowed this year at 97-68.
Redshirt freshman Tim Wagner set a season-high mark with four 3-pointers en route to 12 points and Isaiah Gray led the Warriors with 13 points. Riley Bambenek, despite scoring just eight points on 2-of-11 shooting, managed team-highs with seven rebounds and five assists.
Winona State (9-8, 6-7 NSIC) travel to Wayne, Neb. to take on the Wayne State Wildcats Saturday at 6 p.m. in Rice Auditorium.
