WINONA, Minn. – Tara Roelofs sank a pair of technical foul free throws with three seconds left to lift the Winona State women's basketball team to a 65-63 win over Bemidji State Friday night in front of 950 fans in McCown Gym.
With the Warriors and Beavers deadlocked at 63-63 and WSU holding for the last shot, Winona State lost possession with three seconds left and Bemidji State gained control and signaled for a timeout – one they didn't have. That set up a technical foul, and Roelofs went to the line, making both free throws and sealing the tight victory for the Warriors.
The Warriors opened the game on a 13-4 run, getting along the way a 3-pointer from
Connor Nagle to make it 9-2 and five points from her during the stretch.
Alexis Foley followed with a 3-pointer of her own to make it 16-6 and a double-digit lead for WSU with 12:28 to play.
The Beavers would counter with a 16-4 run of their own, climbing back to take a 22-20 lead on a 3-pointer from Sarah Durand with 6:48 to play. Jumpers from
Kali Hackmann and
Hannah McGlone tied it up at scores of 22-22 and 24-24, but a quick 5-0 run from the Beavers put them back out in front 29-24 with 3:12 to play.
The Warriors would answer again, closing the half on a 7-0 run thanks to back-to-back jumpers from
Tara Roelofs and a 3-point play by
Connor Nagle to close the first half scoring and head into halftime up 31-29.
Nagle led the Warriors with eight points in the first half on 3-of-7 shooting. The Warriors shot 42.4 percent (14-of-33) from the field while holding the Beavers to just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes.
The Warriors opened the second half on a run as a
Hannah McGlone bucket was part of a 6-0 run to take a 39-33 lead, followed by a Roelofs 3-point play to make it 42-35 to end a 9-2 WSU run with 15:23 to play.
After that, it was all Bemidji State for the next five minutes as the Beavers went on a giant 19-4 run capped off by a Sierra Senske layup – her 19th point of the game – followed by a 3-pointer by Hannah Zerr to take a 54-46 lead with 10 minutes to play.
WSU would finally recover, as Foley scored on a hook shot and Nagle hit a 3-pointer – her 13th point of the game – to make it 54-51 with 6:47 to play. Foley soon after created a fast break and found
Kayla Timmerman for the lay-in to tie it at 54-54.
Nagle would then hit another 3-pointer – this one of the step-back variety – to cut a BSU lead to just one at 59-58 with 2:28 to play.
Caitie Zepczyk then hit a free throw to tie it at 59-59, and later Foley hit a pair of free throws to give WSU the lead back at 61-59 with 1:14 to play.Â
The Beavers followed suit with two free throws to knot the game at 61-61 before Foley took it to the hole and scored to put WSU up two yet again with under a minute to play.Â
BSU's Senske scored to tie it one last time at 63-63, setting up the end of the game technical foul and ensuing Roelofs free throws to pick up the 65-63 win.
WSU shot 44.6 percent for the game while the Beavers finished just under 40 percent (39.7).
The guard trio of Foley (17), Nagle (16) and Roelofs (13) combined for 46 of the Warriors' 65 points in the game with all thre players shooting 50 percent or better. Nagle finished 3-of-8 from 3-point range as the Warriors as a team were just 4-of-17.
Winona State (14-5, 10-5 NSIC) moves to a perfect 11-0 in the NSIC and will look to continue that streak Saturday as WSU welcomes Minnesota Crookston to McCown Gymnasium for a 4 p.m. tipoff.
