CARSON, Calif. – The Winona State women's basketball team capped off a perfect showing at the CCA Division II Tip-Off Classic with a 73-49 win over New York Institute of Technology Sunday morning at the Torodome in Carson, California.
The Warriors had a balanced effort offensively, with four scoring in double figures. Alexis Foley, Tara Roelofs and Hannah McGlone each had 15 points, while Kayla Timmerman had 10.
The Warriors shot 47.6 percent from the field while holding the Bears to 30.6 percent.
The Bears gave WSU some trouble in the first half, holding a 15-14 lead after the first quarter and WSU had just a four point lead, 31-27, at halftime. Roelofs had 10 of her 15 points in the first half, while Foley had nine.
But a Foley 3-pointer to open the second half – the fourth of her career-high five in the game – gave WSU a seven-point lead and her final one a couple minutes later to again get the lead back to seven, was a spark for the Warriors. Connor Nagle then hit a 3-pointer with 3:50 to play in the third quarter to put the Warriors up 44-33 for its first double-digit lead of the game.
The lead would not get under seven the remainder of the game as it enjoyed a 12-point cushion at halftime.
McGlone and Timmerman helped put the game away, and a Timmerman basket with just over five minutes to play in the game upped the WSU lead to 20. Roelofs soon after hit a 3-pointer to give WSU its largest lead of the game at 69-43 until a basket at the buzzer by freshman Kayla Schaefer ended the game with a 24-point margin at 73-49.
Winona State (3-0) travels to Lincoln, Nebraska next Sunday for an exhibition tilt with the Cornhuskers before its home opener against Saint Mary's on November 14.
