POMONA, Calif. – The Winona State men's basketball team ran into a hot-shooting Cal Poly Pomona squad Saturday night, falling 77-50 in the final game of its three-game California swing.
The Broncos shot a staggering 74 percent (17-of-23) in the first half, including hitting 9-of-12 shots from behind the arc, while the Warriors made just 8-of-23 shots from the field and just 3-of-8 from long range. The result was a 46-21 deficit after 20 minutes.
The Warriors were the better team in the second half, as they put together a good shooting performance of their own at 62 percent, but couldn't close the large gap.
Freshman Tommy Gathje scored eight of his team-high 10 points in the second half, going 5-of-8 from the field in the game while grabbing five rebounds. WSU's bench performed well in the second half, scoring all but two of WSU's 29 points in the final 20 minutes. Kyle Bauman led WSU with six rebounds.
WSU committed 19 turnovers in the game, which CPP took advantage of with a 25-7 edge in points off turnovers.

Winona State (1-3) opens NSIC play next Saturday when it travels to Upper Iowa to take on the Peacocks at 4 p.m. at Dorman Gymnasium in Fayette, Iowa.
