No. 11 Warriors Beat Loras 81-50 In Final Nonconference Tune-up

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 11 Winona State women's basketball team closed out its nonconference season with an 81-50 victory over Loras College Tuesday night in McCown Gymnasium.

Three Warriors finished in double figures, led by Tara Roelofs' game-high 16 points – 10 of which came in the second half – on 6-of-14 shooting while tying a team-high five rebounds. Alexis Foley added 15 points while going 6-of-6 from the free throw line and Connor Nagle scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half while snagging a game-high five steals.

The Duhawks opened the game with four quick points, but WSU responded with 11 unanswered points to take an 11-4 lead midway through the first quarter. Connor Nagle's second 3-pointer with seven minutes to play in the second quarter gave her 12 for the half and the Warriors its first double-digit lead at 25-14.

Loras battled back late in the first half and a Megan Jones 3-pointer cut the lead to 33-28 with 1:45 to play, but layups from Emily Wirth and Emily Passint pushed the lead back to nine, 37-28, at halftime.

The Warriors rebounded from a first half where it shot just 36.8 percent to shoot just under 60 percent in the second half. The Duhawks scored the first nine points of the second half to pull to within one at 38-37, but couldn't even the score as WSU answered with a 10-0 spurt to bring it back to a 48-37 with 2:25 to play.

Roelofs took over early in the fourth quarter, as a jumper, followed by a 3-pointer, another jumper and a successful 3-point play made it a 10-0 run all on her own to push the lead to 65-42 and WSU eventually outscored the Duhawks 26-8 in the final 10 minutes to cruise to the final score of 81-50, its largest lead of the game.

Despite being outrebounded for the first time this season by a 36-31 edge, WSU's feisty defense more than made up for it, turning over the Duhawks 27 times and turning it into a 35-4 differential in points off turnovers. WSU has now forced 56 turnovers in the past two games.

No. 11 Winona State (7-0) opens NSIC play Saturday when it travels to Upper Iowa to take on the Peacocks at 4 p.m. in Fayette, Iowa.
