WINONA, Minn. – Kyle Bauman scored 19 points to lead the Winona State men's basketball team to a 74-61 exhibition victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse Sunday afternoon in McCown Gym.
Bauman sparked the Warriors early, scoring the Warriors' first 10 points of the game. The big man showed his range with a 3-pointer to open WSU's scoring, then hit three straight layups – the last of which was a 3-point play – to give the Warriors a 10-6 lead with 15:10 to play in the first half.
Five minutes later, Bauman hit another layup to give WSU its first double-digit lead of the game at 23-12. But a 3-pointer from UWL's Devin Yurk – who had a game-high 21 poitns in the game – cut WSU's lead to just five at 27-22 with 5:50 to play in the half. A pair of free throws by the Eagles' Sean Wheeler made it a one possession game at 30-27, but WSU ended the half on a 10-2 run capped off by a big dunk from Bauman to end the half with a 40-29 advantage.
A 3-pointer from UWL's Milton Cummings early in the second half briefly got the Eagles back to single digits at 42-34, but Bauman hit a pair of free throws on the other end and WSU enjoyed a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game.
Mark Blacklock finished with nine points and eight rebounds, while Conrad Masberg added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Warriors shot 47 percent from the field while holding UWL to 33 percent shooting. WSU also outrebounded the Eagles by a 45-28 margin.
WSU opens its regular season with a noon tipoff Saturday against Wisconsin Lutheran in McCown Gym.
