ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team overcame more than an eight-minute second half scoring drought to beat Concordia-St. Paul 59-50 Friday night at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul.
The Warriors, who trailed 31-30 at halftime, missed its first seven shots to open the second half and a big put-back dunk by Concordia's Josh Monroy put the Warriors down 39-30 with under 12 minutes to play. A floater from Bauman – the first of his 10 second half points – at the 11:36 mark stopped the drought and the Warriors were the better team the rest of the way, as the shot sparked a 14-2 run spanning more than five minutes bookended by a Bauman shot to put the Warriors up 46-41 with 6:05 to play.
Concordia battled back to knot the score at 48-48 at the under-five media timeout, but Corey Jeffs drilled the final of his three 3-pointers to put WSU up by three. A pair of free throws got Concordia to 53-50 with 3:09 to play, but WSU shut down the Golden Bears for the remainder of the game as WSU earned the 59-50 win and its third straight NSIC victory.
Joining Bauman with 10 second half points was Riley Bambenek, and the duo finished with a game-leading 17 and 16 points, respectively.
A tenacious WSU defense held the Golden Bears to without a 3-pointer, as CSP missed all 13 of its attempts from long range. The Warriors, meanwhile, made six of its 21 shots from 3-point distance.
After shooting 48 percent (12-of-25) in the first half to grab a one point lead, CSP shot a dismal 21 percent (6-of-28) in the final 20 minutes, while WSU was an even 40.6 percent (13-of-32) and 40 percent (10-of-25) in the two halves.
