Warriors Dominate Battle of Unbeatens With 91-52 Win Over USF

WINONA, Minn. – In a battle of undefeated teams, the No. 10 Winona State women's basketball team had no problem coming out on top, earning a 91-52 rout of Sioux Falls Saturday night in front of 1,002 fans in McCown Gym.

The Warriors, who improved to 10-0 for the first time in history, dominated most of the statistical categories against the first team receiving votes in this week's WBCA Top 25 Poll. WSU outshot the Cougars 58.3 percent (35-of-60) to 29.5 percent (18-of-61), made 9-of-18 3-pointers while USF hit 7-of-32 and outrebounded the Cougars 43-28.

Tara Roelofs turned in another fine performance, scoring 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting – including a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range – while pulling down five rebounds and picking up two steals.

USF (8-1, 1-1 NSIC) scored the first five points of the game, but Roelofs put the Warriors on the board with a 3-pointer and a little later on Connor Nagle hit one to give WSU its first lead at 10-9. The two teams would trade leads on a pair of occasions over the next couple minutes before an Alexis Foley 3-point basket gave WSU a four-point lead at 18-14. Back-to-back layups from Jenny Weiland and a pair of free throws from Foley capped off an 11-0 WSU run to open up a 24-14 lead with 2:26 left in the first quarter and WSU led 27-20 after one period of play.

The Warriors were all over the Cougars in the second quarter, as a relentless defense kept USF to just five points while the Warriors put up 21. After a basket by Sioux Falls to start the quarter, Roelofs and Kayla Timmerman hit back-to-back 3-pointers and later a Timmerman free throw made it a 7-0 spurt. After one USF free throw, WSU extended the lead as nine straight points pushed the run to 16-1 and WSU led by 20 at 43-23. A 3-point play converted by Jenny Weiland with under 10 seconds to play in the half brought WSU's halftime lead to 48-25.

USF wouldn't fare much better in the second half, as the second quarter run continued into the third. A Foley jumper to start the second half doubled up the Cougars at 50-25 and then she hit an athletic layup to bring it to 56-20 and give WSU an 8-0 run to start the half. When Nagle hit a step-back 3-pointer with 3:11 to play in the third quarter, WSU had built a 28 point lead and the game was effectively over.

The Warriors didn't let up, however, as even the bench was able to compete with the Cougar starters. Freshman Liz Evenocheck scored eight points and hit two 3-pointers in the final 2:32. Her jumper with 25 seconds left was the final basket of the game and WSU's largest lead of the game at 39 points as WSU claimed the 91-52 win.

Foley finished with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting with five assists. Timmerman added 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting while grabbing six rebounds. Hannah McGlone led WSU with eight boards.

Winona State (10-0, 3-0 NSIC) hits the road next weekend, taking on Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday at 6 p.m.
