ROCHESTER, Minn. – The Winona State softball team suffered its first defeat of the season in a 1-0 loss before rebounding for a 10-6 win in game two to earn a doubleheader split with Grand View Thursday afternoon in Rochester.
Down 5-4 in the third inning of game two after dropping a 1-0 decision in the opener, sophomore Karly Olson came up with the biggest hit of the day, a 3-run homer to left field that plated Allyson O'Herron and Jessica Kullman to take a 7-5 lead that proved to be the go-ahead runs as WSU eventually won the game 10-6 after the game was suspended due to time after 5 and a half innings.
Game one was a pitchers' duel, with only six hits combined between the two squads. Trouble struck for the Warriors in the top of the fifth, as a single to right center followed by a stolen base for Grand View put a runner in scoring position with one out. Hanna Lythberg made an error on a comebacker to the pitcher that plated what would be the only run of the game.
Ashley Walker earned a no decision in game one while pitching four innings while striking out six and giving up just one hit. Lythberg was handed her first loss of the season despite also giving up just one hit in three innings with a trio of strikeouts. Lythberg rebounded for a win in game two, pitching three innings while giving up three hits and just one earned run in relief of starter Olson, who gave up five earned runs in three innings of work.
Winona State (8-1) is idle until March 8 when it plays the first of 10 games in Florida.
