SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Redshirt sophomore Tara Roelofs scored a career-high 24 points and the Winona State basketball team fought hard to battle back, but could never completely close the deficit, falling to MSU Moorhead 93-84 Saturday night in the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament quarterfinals at The Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
Roelofs came up big – especially down the stretch – to score the most points of her Warrior career, hitting four 3-pointers while going 8 of 14 from the field overall. Connor Nagle added 21 points on the strength of four 3-pointers and hitting nine of 10 free throws.
Unfortunately for the Warriors, the Dragons' Heather Strese picked a good night to have a career performance, scoring 36 points on 13-of-18 shooting along with hitting six of seven 3-pointers and grabbing 13 rebounds. The Warriors, meanwhile, had no player grab more than four rebounds as WSU was outrebounded on the glass by a hefty 42-23 margin.
The Warriors shot just 32 percent in the first half compared to 46.9 percent from the Dragons. Nagle hit a three early on but WSU quickly found itself down 9-5 and eventually Strese scored 12 of MSUM's first 14 points to lead the Dragons' quick charge. After back-to-back MSUM 3-pointers it had taken its first double digit lead at 22-12 and the Warriors would have to play catch-up the remainder of the night.
WSU would counter with an ensuing 6-0 run to make it 22-18, and a Jenny Weiland 3-point play made it 25-21, but the Dragons pushed the lead to 30-22 as the Warriors already were being outrebounded 20-8. Nagle and Roelofs each hit threes late in the half to help keep the deficit at single digits as WSU headed into the locker room down 39-32.
The Warriors, despite still being outscored in the second half 54-52, shot much better in the final 20 minutes, shooting at a 55 percent clip (17-of-31). WSU made its best run of the game to open the second half, using a 10-3 spurt to close to within one at 43-42 capped off by a Foley jumper. But it didn't last long as the Dragons went on an ensuing 8-0 run to open up a 51-42 advantage.
A 3-point play by Foley again got it back to a one-possession game with over 12 minutes to play at 55-52 but it's as close as the Warriors would get as the Dragons got the lead back to double digits by the six minute mark and wouldn't allow WSU to make another serious comeback.
Foley joined Roelofs and Nagle in double figures, scoring 16 on 6-of-18 shooting and tied a career high with seven assists with just one turnover.
Winona State finishes its season with a 20-8 record, the fifth 20-win season in program history, with all five coming in head coach Scott Ballard's 11-year tenure.
