Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

First Half Surge Propels Warriors To 67-47 Win Over Bulldogs

DULUTH, Minn. – The Winona State women's basketball team turned in a dominant defensive performance and got a strong contribution from its bench in a 67-47 road win over Minnesota Duluth Saturday in Romano Gymnasium.

Sophomore center Kayla Timmerman was the only Warrior in double-figures with a game-high 20 points thanks to a 9-for-14 shooting performance.

Much like last night's meeting against St. Cloud State, Winona State (17-5, 13-5 NSIC) got off to a bit of a tough start as Minnesota Duluth (11-11, 9-9 NSIC) jumped out to a 4-3 lead and made just one shot in the first 4:36 of the game.

However, Winona State quickly put an end to the slow start with a spark off its bench. The Warriors went on a 16-0 run between the 14:29 mark to the 10:08 mark to pull out to a 19-4 lead. During that stretch, 12 of the 16 points came from Timmerman and Emily Passint off the bench.

WSU would maintain a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half and would go into the locker room with a 31-16 lead halftime advantage.

The Winona State offense was efficient in the first half, shooting 48 percent from the floor. At the same time, the WSU defense shut down Minnesota Duluth, holding them to just 20 percent shooting and forcing them to commit nine first half turnovers.

Timmerman led the Warriors 13 points off the bench on 6-of-10 shooting in the opening 20 minutes.

Winona State came out of the locker room strong. Even though the Bulldogs got the lead down to 12 at 33-21, the Warriors would be able to stretch the lead to 20 at 47-27 on a Timmerman layup and would not look back as Minnesota Duluth for the remainder of the game would not be able to pull the game any closer than 14.

After the 11:46 mark when the Bulldogs pulled the score to 47-33, the Warriors would put the game away on an 18-8 run over the next 10 minutes capped off by an Allison Hocking fast-break layup to give Winona State its largest lead of the game at 65-41.

Winona State's offense stayed efficient from beginning to end, shooting 49 percent from the floor and despite committing 19 turnovers, the Warriors forced the Bulldogs into committing 19 turnovers of their own and held them to just 30 percent shooting from the floor, including 0-of-19 shooting from beyond the arc.

Outside of Timmerman, the Warriors got a balanced scoring effort out of Tara Roelofs, Caitie Zepczyk, and Passint, all scoring eight points apiece.

Hannah McGlone led the Warriors on the glass with six rebounds and Alexis Foley went from scorer last night to contributor today as she led the Warriors with five assists.

Winona State will look to make it a three-game road winning streak as it will travel to take on Minnesota State next Friday night in Mankato and Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday to wrap up the team's final road games of the season.
