Warriors Drop Games To No. 11 Emporia State, Missouri Western

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The No. 14 Winona State softball team dropped games against No. 11 Emporia State and Missouri Western to close out the Apple Market Classic Sunday in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Warriors fell behind early in the opener en route to a 9-3 defeat before losing the final game of the tournament to the host Griffons 8-0.

The Hornets produced five earned runs in the first inning off Ashley Walker and added a sixth run in the second inning on an RBI single to take a quick 6-0 lead. McKenna Larsen drew a bases-loaded walk in the third to make it 6-1 but Emporia State added two more in the fourth to pull ahead 8-1.

Reed Karsten added an RBI double in the fifth and Larsen recorded another RBI on a groundout to make 8-3 but the Hornets had one more in the sixth to earn the 9-3 victory.

WSU struggled to get its offense going in the nightcap against host school Missouri Western, mustering just three hits in the game while the Griffons recorded 10. Karsten had two of WSU's hits – including a double – while Allyson O'Herron added the other one.

Winona State (18-7) is scheduled to play its home opener Thursday with a doubleheader against Upper Iowa set for a 2 p.m. first pitch at Alumni Field.
