Warriors Blast Four Homers En Route To Sweep Of Wayne State

WAYNE, Neb. – The Winona State softball improved to 6-0 in NSIC play with a doubleheader road sweep of Wayne State Tuesday afternoon in sunny Wayne, Neb.

The Warriors responded from an early three-run deficit in game one, scoring seven unanswered runs to win 7-3 before claiming a 12-2 five-inning victory in game two.

The Wildcats got to WSU starter Ashley Walker early, using a first inning home run and a pair of RBI hits in the second inning to take a quick 3-0 lead.

That's all Walker would allow, though, as the WSU offense quickly battled back. McKenna Larsen continued her recent hot streak with an RBI single in the third before Allyson O'Herron brought home a pair with a 2 RBI single to tie it up at 3-3.

After a scoreless fourth inning, WSU would add three more in the fifth as Ashley Walker led off the inning with a left field double and Morgan Lintz brought her home with a two-run home run to left center field. Larsen then made it back-to-back jacks with a center field homer to increase the lead to 6-3. The Warriors would go on to add one more in the sixth with an Ashley Walker RBI single to create the game's 7-3 final.

Winona State's three, four and five hitters each recorded two RBI in the game while Walker improved to 10-3 in the circle.

Game two resembled the first, as Wayne State again scored early with a pair of first inning runs to take a quick 2-0 advantage. But the Warriors put a six spot on the scoreboard in the third inning as an RBI base hit for Walker, a bases-clearing double for O'Herron and a two-run home run for Natalie Kalmes put WSU up 6-2 and the Warriors would not look back, instead extending the lead even further.

Reed Karsten got in on the long ball action in the fourth inning with a solo shot, and a Lintz RBI double upped the lead to 8-2. By the time the fifth inning rolled around, a Karsten bases-clearing double and an RBI double from Walker had made it 12-2 as the Warriors cruised to the 12-2 victory in five innings.

Hanna Lythberg improved her season mark to 12-3 in the circle, pitching all five innings while giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out six Wildcats.

Winona State (24-7) looks forward to its first home games of the season this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Minnesota Duluth Friday and St. Cloud State Saturday at 1 p.m. at Alumni Field in Winona.
