SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The No. 17 Winona State softball team's normally potent offense was held in check Wednesday afternoon at the hands of No. 11 Augustana, falling 11-0 and 2-1 in a road doubleheader at Bowden Field in Sioux Falls.
The Warriors fell behind early in game one and were unable to recover, as the Vikings scored three first inning runs on an RBI double from Janelle Trautmann followed by a pair of unearned runs after a fielding error by Allyson O'Herron.
The 3-0 Augie lead held heading into the bottom of the fourth, but that's where the game got away from the Warriors, as the Vikings jumped on starter Ashley Walker to the tune of eight runs on five hits to take an 11-0 lead and marking an early exit for Walker, who gave up nine earned runs on the day.
The Warriors made an attempt to get the score back under eight runs and keep the game alive in the fifth as McKenna Larsen led off the inning with a double to right center and Jessica Kullmann singled to advance Larsen to third, but after Kalmes reached on a fielder's choice and was subsequently picked off, O'Herron popped up to end the game and preserve the shutout for Augustana.
The Warriors battled in the nightcap, but a walk-off sacrifice fly by Trautmann in the bottom of the seventh gave the Vikings a 2-1 victory.
Augustana took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the third, but the Warriors got on the scoreboard to tie things up the following inning when Natalie Kalmes singled to left field to bring home Larsen and tie the game at 1-1. A fielding error on the play allowed Kalmes to trot to second and give Kullmann a chance to score, but was thrown out at home to prevent WSU from taking the lead – a run the Warriors would desperately need as the 1-1 score held until the walk-off winner.
Despite the loss, Hanna Lythberg (18-7) had a strong outing against the region's top-ranked team, going the distance while scattering seven hits and giving up just one earned run while striking out four Vikings.
Winona State (38-12, 20-5 NSIC) returns home to wrap up the regular season with a pair of twinbills against Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls on Saturday and Sunday with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. each day at Alumni Field.
