Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Warriors Start Fast, Finish Strong In 63-49 Win Over Wayne State

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 14 Winona State women's basketball completed the weekend sweep of South Division foes without trailing in either game, earning a 63-49 win over Wayne State Saturday night in McCown Gymnasium.

The Warriors started hot and finished strong, holding the Wildcats to just two points in the first quarter and seven in the fourth quarter.

Alexis Foley led the Warriors with a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting and a 2-of-5 mark from behind the arc. Tara Roelofs finished with 14 points with four assists and three rebounds, while Nagle also scored 14 points with five rebounds and a pair of steals.

Like Friday night, the Warriors used a quick start once again with a 9-0 spurt to open the game. Foley hit a 3-pointer with 2:47 to play in the quarter to put the Warriors up 12-2 and held the Wildcats scoreless the rest of the way as Wayne State made just one of their first 12 shots from the field in the first quarter while the Warriors went 5-of-17 to lead 16-2 after the first quarter.

A 3-pointer from AFoley put WSU up 21-9 midway through the second quarter and a triple from Nagle with 2:34 to play in the half extended it to 28-14 and the Warriors led 30-20 at halftime.

But an 11-2 run from the Wildcats in the third quarter capped off by a Maggie Schulte 3-pointer cut the lead to just three at 36-33 with 4:06 to play. Wayne State was able to keep the deficit at three on a number of occasions but could never get any closer as a 3-pointer from Nagle at the 8:22 mark of the fourth put the Warriors up 50-43 and sparked a 12-0 run with a 3-pointer from Jenny Tuttle and a 3-point play from Foley sealing the game as WSU went up by 16 points at 59-43 with 3:58 to play and were able to cruise to the 63-49 win.

Winona State – the NSIC leader in scoring defense – held its opponent to just 49 points for the second straight night. The Wildcats shot just 31 percent (16-of-51) and were just 3-of-19 (16 percent) from 3-point range. The Warriors, meanwhile, shot 38 percent (23-of-60) overall and 7-of-25 (28 percent) from long range.

Hannah McGlone finished with 10 rebounds – the sixth time in the last seven games she's reached double-digit boards – while Kayla Timmerman grabbed nine.

WSU (19-2, 12-2 NSIC) heads back on the road next weekend, traveling to Bemidji State for a 6 p.m. tap Friday night before heading to Minnesota Crookston to face the Golden Eagles at 4 p.m. Saturday.
