Warriors Fall To No. 4 MSU Moorhead 93-72

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team trailed by just four points with 12 minutes to play, but fell to fourth-ranked MSU Moorhead 93-72 Sunday afternoon in McCown Gymnasium.

Winona State was able to trim an 11-point deficit – MSUM's largest lead of the game – down to four in a four minute span early in the second half as a 6-0 run on a Kyle Bauan layup, two Mark Blacklock free throws and a layup from Nick Arenz cut it to 54-49 with 14:46 to play. Soon after, Corey Jeffs drilled a 3-pointer and Blacklock hit a jumper at the 12:29 mark to trail by just 60-56.

The Dragons responded with a 12-2 run capped off with an Aaron Lien 3-pointer to move back ahead 72-58 and the Warriors were unable to get back to single digits as a 15-0 run spanning more than four minutes put the game away as an Arroyo Edwards 3-pointer put the Dragons up 91-65 and MSUM cruised to the 93-72 win.

WSU hung with the Dragons in the first half, trailing by just seven, 43-36 and holding a slight edge in shooting percentage, with WSU at 51.9 percent (14-of-27) and MSUM at an even 50 percent (14-of-28). Conrad Masberg led WSU with eight first half points. The Warriors were able to counter the Dragons' runs, as a 25-14 MSUM lead with 10:29 to play was cut to three five minutes later on a 3-pointer from Nick Arenz and kept the lead in single digits for the remainder of the half.

WSU shot just 35 percent (14-of-40) in the second half and were just 3-of-13 on 3-point attempts while MSU Moorhead shot 53.3 percent (16-of-30) and were 7-of-12 from behind the arc.
