WINONA, Minn. – The No. 9 Winona State women's basketball team battled back from a six-point deficit with under two and a half minutes to play to beat MSU Moorhead 52-49 Sunday afternoon in McCown Gymnasium.
Senior guard Alexis Foley – despite a 7-for-22 shooting day – came up with clutch shots down the stretch. Trailing 49-43 with 2:20 to play, Foley hit a crucial 3-point basket – one of her two in the game – to bring it to a one-possession game for the first time since the beginning of the fourth quarter. After a strong defensive effort on the other end, Foley hit another big running jumper to bring WSU to within one at 49-48 with 1:07 left.
With under 40 seconds to play, Jenny Tuttle came up with a steal, who then found Hannah McGlone in transition for the basket and the Warriors' first lead since midway through the third quarter as WSU assembled a crucial 7-0 run. WSU would not trail again, as a Kayla Timmerman block under the MSUM basket gave the Warriors possession. Eventually Connor Nagle hit a pair of free throws with five seconds remaining and MSU Moorhead turned it over to complete the Warriors' rally.
Winona State held the Dragons scoreless for the final 4:36 and to just five points for entire final quarter while WSU scored 13.
Foley had game highs with 18 points and five assists while playing 38 minutes.
WSU had offensive struggles for the second straight day and found itself in its second straight defensive battle, shooting just 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from the field and 20.8 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range but holding the Dragons nearly the same at 35.6 percent (16-of-45) and 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from long range.
The game was close throughout, as the Warriors held a one-point lead at 16-15 after the first quarter. A layup from Foley put WSU in front 22-17 midway through the second but from that point on neither team took more than a one possession lead and a 3-pointer from MSUM's Natalie Van Wyhe sent the team's to the locker room tied up at 29-29.
Timmerman joined Foley in double figures, scoring 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 2-of-5 from 3-point range along with four rebounds and two blocks. Nagle scored seven points with three assists and three steals. McGlone tied a game high with 10 rebounds.
WSU turned the ball over just 10 times while MSUM committed 17 turnovers. The result was a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers.
Winona State (14-1, 7-1 NSIC) spends the next two weekends on the road, beginning with Friday and Saturday matchups against Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State.
