CROOKSTON, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team held Minnesota Crookston to just 10 first half points and just 24 percent shooting overall in a 53-41 victory Saturday evening at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston.
With the win, the Warriors earned their first weekend road sweep since the 2013-14 season. The Warriors also improved to 9-7 in the NSIC and got back to .500 with a 10-10 record overall.
Senior Mark Blacklock led the WSU with 14 points on 4-of-8 shooting and a 5-of-5 mark from the free throw line. Blacklock also grabbed eight rebounds and had five assists and two blocks. Corey Jeffs had 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting from 3-point range, and Isaiah Gray had 10 points and five rebounds.
Neither team was effective in the first half offensively, with the Warriors shooting 40.9 percent (9-of-22) and going 0-for-5 from 3-point range. But the Golden Eagles couldn't buy a basket, making just 3-of-28 shots in the first half (10.7 percent) and hit just 1-of-10 shots from 3-point range.
The Warriors were able to hit five 3-pointers in the second half, with the first coming from Corey Jeffs at the 12:16 mark to put WSU up 33-17 and the Warriors led by double digits the rest of the way to earn the 53-41 victory.
The 41 points is the fewest the Warriors have given up this season and UMC's 24 percent shooting marked the worst shooting performance of any WSU opponent.
Winona State now enjoys a four-game homestand spanning the next two weekends, beginning with matchups against St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth next Friday and Saturday in McCown Gymnasium.
