SAN JUAN, P.R. - The Winona State women's basketball team was able to top University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon (UPRB) 71-67 to wrap up their trip to Puerto Rico. Three Warriors scored in double digits to hold off UPRB. The Warriors dropped their first matchup with UPRB in their first game of the trip.

Kayla Timmerman started by scoring the Warriors' first four points in the first few minutes of the game. UPRB would make a 3-pointer and sink two free throws to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. UPRB would make another 3-pointer, but
Jenny Tuttle would add a 3-pointer of her own to keep the margin at to one, 8-7. The lead would exchange hands twice and UPRB would have it 19-16, at the end of quarter one.

The Warriors would regain the lead in the second quarter after a
Hannah McGlone layup and a
Tara Roelofs three-pointer. The Warriors defense would turn up the pressure on UPRB in the second quarter. It would be three Warrior steals, two timeouts and a UPRB line change before UPRB would add a point to their score late in the half. The Warriors would stretch their lead to 11 before ending the half up 36-27.

UPRB would work on cutting into the Warrior lead in the third quarter. Half way through the quarter the Warriors still held on to their lead at 46-35. UPRB would use a quick flurry of 3-pointers to get the Warriors lead down to just one at 52-51 by the end of the third quarter.

There would not be much separation in the fourth quarter as both teams traded buckets. With 2:37 left to play the Warriors were leading 68-65, two free throws from Jenney Weiland would make it 70-65. After a UPRB timeout they would get a jumper to fall to cut their deficit to three. UPRB would foul Timmerman and she would knock down one of her two free throws with 17 seconds on the clock. Bayamon would miss a last chance 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.
Winona State shot a solid 54.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from behind the arc. University of Puerto Rico-Bayamon shot 41.4 percent from the field and 26.7 from behind the arc. UPRB would make 11 of 15 free throws for 73.3 percent. Winona State made nine of 17 free throws for 52.9 percent.

Timmerman led the Warriors with 15 points, eight rebounds and dished out six assists. McGlone and Roelofs added 14 and 10 points, respectively.
The Warriors (2-1) will continue play on U.S. soil as they travel to Quincy, Ill. to face Maryville University (1-0) and Quincy University (0-2) November 18th and 19th. These will be the last road games before they take the floor at home for the first time on the new court in McCown Gymnasium.
