QUINCY, Ill. – The Warriors came out on top against Quincy University(QU) in the QU Subway Tip-Off Classic Saturday afternoon. In a tight contest the Warriors outlasted the Hawks to win 70-66.
In the first quarter the Warriors traded buckets with the Hawks and ended the quarter with a four-point lead.
Tara Roelofs had nine points in the first ten minutes of action. A 3-pointer from the Hawks would give them a 9-7 lead but a
Hannah McGlone free throw and Roelofs jumper would give it back to the Warriors. The Hawks had three, three-pointers to help keep them close in the first quarter.
The Hawks would again hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter. The Warriors would stretch their lead to ten points after a
MaKena Panning three-point connection a minute and a half into the quarter. Two Hawks threes would cut the Warrior lead to four. With 1:24 left in the half the Hawks would tie the score at 24. Teams would exchange shots in the last minute of the quarter and the Warriors would have a 28-26 lead going into half.
Out of the half both teams would go basket for basket until the Hawks would sink two free throws almost three minutes in, to gain a two-point lead. Another basket by the Hawks would give them a four-point lead, their largest of the game. Roelofs and
Liz Evenocheck would add baskets to tie the score at 34 with 5:49 left in the third quarter. The score would be tied four more times in the third, until Roelofs would hit both free throw opportunities to take back the lead at the end of the quarter. The scoring was even from both teams as they tacked on 17 a piece in the third quarter.
The Hawks would gain the lead and hold it until 4:53 left in the fourth quarter, when Tuttle would connected on a 3-pointer to tie things up, yet again, this time at 55. Tuttle then, hit another 3-pointer and a layup to push the lead to five. With eight seconds left
Jenny Weiland made both free throws to extend the Warriors lead to seven points.Tthe Hawks would knock down a three pointer to bring them within four points, at 70-66 as the clock expired.
As a team the Warriors shot 49 percent from the field, 50 percent from behind the arc and made 13 of 16 free throws. The Hawks shot 47 percent from the field, 35 percent from behind the arc and made 12 of 14 free throws.
Tara Roelofs and
Jenny Tuttle were selected to the All-Tournament team for their performances. Roelofs averaged 22 points, shots 64 percent from the field and made 6 of 8 free throws on the weekend. Tuttle averaged 10 points, shot 41 percent from the field, made 4 of 7 from behind the arc and dished out 6 assists.
The Warriors (4-1) will return home Tuesday night in McCown Gym for their home opener against Concordia University Wisconsin (2-0) at 7 p.m.
