Concordia Holds Off Warriors

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Winona State (4-4, 1-3 NSIC) tried to make a late run on Saturday night but fell 82-75 at Concordia St. Paul (4-6, 1-3 CSP). In a game of runs the Golden Bears were able to make the final one and held on despite 20 points from Riley Bambenek and 18 points from Kyle Bauman.
 
Winona State started off the way they finished last night, shooting the ball well, and it led to a 9-2 early edge. The Golden Bears would respond with a 20-2 run and led 22-11. The Warriors would answer right back scoring the next 16 points of the game and grabbed a 27-22 lead with just over five minutes left in the first half. Bambenek had eight points during the 16-0 run.
 
Concordia put together the final run in a half of runs, scoring nine straight to erase a 29-24 deficit and turn it into a 33-29 lead. By the end of the first half the Golden Bears would cling to a one-point lead.
 
The Golden Bears held a 10-2 advantage at the foul line in the first half. Winona State was able to get offensive rebounds at it led to 12 second chance points in the half.
 
Isaiah Gray put WSU back in front, 41-40, with a jumper just 82 seconds into the second half. The lead would trade hands on a couple occasions before another run put CSP in front by 12. The Golden Bears 14-0 run was put on ice after a put back layup from Bauman. Back-to-back three's, one by Bambenek and one by Corey Jeffs brought the Warriors within seven just past the midway point in the second half.
 
The CSP lead would play tag with eight and ten for the next three minutes before a backcourt turnover would lead to a 13-point advantage for Concordia. Winona State was able get the lead under ten with a 5-0 run with less than four minutes to play.
 
Jeffs hit a three pointer with two minutes to play, cutting the Concordia lead to just six at 77-71. Winona State forced a shot clock violation the next possession. Bauman was fouled while shooting a three and hit two of three at the foul line, cutting the deficit to four. The Warriors had a few looks to get within a single possession but it was not to be as Concordia held on for a seven-point victory.
