WINONA, Minn. – The No. 9 Winona State women's basketball team clinched its first NSIC regular season championship in program history Saturday afternoon with a 73-60 victory over Concordia-St. Paul in front of 1,021 fans in McCown Gymnasium.
The Warriors, who improved to 25-2 with an 18-2 mark in NSIC play, also set a new program record for wins in a season, topping a 24-7 record by the 2008-09 team.
Winona State, which initially clinched at least a share of the title, earned the championship outright minutes later as Sioux Falls – now three games back of the Warriors with two games to play – fell to Augustana 64-54.
Kayla Timmerman set a pair of program block records in the win, breaking WSU's single-season block record previously held by Amanda Brown, who recorded 72 during the 1999-00 season. Timmerman entered the game needing just three blocks to break the record, but she'd soar past that mark, also shattering the single-game record of eight as well. Timmerman's previous career high was six – set on six separate occasions – but finished the game with 11 swats, not only a program record but also the most in Division II this season.
Timmerman finished one point shy of a very rare triple-double, ending the night with 11 blocks, 11 rebounds and nine points.
A pair of seniors also shined on senior night, as Connor Nagle and Alexis Foley combined for 35 points. Nagle concluded the night with another stellar showing from 3-point range, hitting 5-of-9 shots along with seven rebounds and four assists. Foley added her 16 points with a 3-of-5 mark from 3-point range and 5-of-13 shooting overall with a game-high five assists and four rebounds.
Tara Roelofs also turned in an impressive night, scoring 18 points on the strength of 5-of-6 3-pointers along with four rebounds and three assists.
WSU trailed 8-3 very early on in the game after CSP's Anna Schmitt – one of two players this season to score 20 points against the Warriors in the first meeting of the season – hit a 3-pointer, but Foley and Nagle responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to give WSU the lead and the Warriors would never trail again. A 16-0 run to end a 29-5 run turned a 16-13 lead into a 32-13 lead with 8:33 to play in the first half as Timmerman, Nagle and Tara Roelofs (two) each hit 3-pointers in the stretch.
The Golden Bears ended the half with a 5-0 run and opened the second half with a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 37-25 and a Schmitt 3-pointer cut it to nine with 7:02 to play in the third quarter, but the Warriors methodically increased the lead from there and a Nagle 3-pointer early in the fourth pushed the lead to 20 at 62-42 and cruised to the NSIC championship.
No. 9 Winona State (25-2, 18-2 NSIC) closes out regular season play next weekend when it travels to Wayne State and Augustana before hosting a first round NSIC Tournament game on Wednesday, Feb. 24 in McCown Gym.
