WSU Advances In NSIC Tournament With 94-75 Win Over Minot State

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team posted a 94-75 victory over Minot State Wednesday evening in a NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament matchup in front of 1,175 fans in McCown Gymnasium.

The victory sends the Warriors (15-12) to the quarterfinals, where it will play Northern State at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Kyle Bauman tied a career high with 25 points on a terrific 11-of-15 shooting and a 3-for-6 mark from 3-point range and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Isaiah Gray added 21 points on 6-of-9 shooting with six assists and a pair of steals.

As a team, the Warriors shot 55.7 percent (34-of-61) from the field while holding the Beavers to under 35 percent (22-of-63). WSU hit 11 3-pointers while holding the Beavers to just four. The biggest statistical discrepancy was perhaps in the assist column, where WSU dished out 17 and held Minot State two just two.

Corey Jeffs sparked the Warriors early on with back-to-back 3-pointers to put WSU ahead 6-2 and a jumper from Bauman had the Warriors up 10-4, but a 6-0 MSU run tied it at 10-10 at the 13:51 mark. The Beavers used back-to-back 3-pointers to take a four-point lead – their largest of the game – at 20-16 at the 10 minute mark, but a 13-2 run by the Warriors gave WSU a 29-22 lead about three minutes later. WSU held the lead throughout the remainder of the half but the Beavers kept it close, trailing by just one, 39-38, at the break.

A 9-3 run early in the second half put Minot State in front 47-45, but five straight points from Conrad Masberg put the Warriors up three. The Beavers would tie it on three occasions but would never retake the lead, as back-to-back threes from Masberg and Bauman made it 61-55 with 12:08 to play and WSU had built a 72-63 cushion by the 7:06 mark. Free throws helped the Warriors extend the lead even further and WSU had a 20-point lead on a pair of occasions late before settling for the comfortable 19-point victory.

The Warriors' balanced offense saw five players score in double figures. In addition to Bauman and Gray, Corey Jeffs finished the night with 13 points, while Masberg and Riley Bambenek each had 10. Connor Flack added nine.
