WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State men's basketball team brought its winning streak to five games with an 81-60 victory over Minnesota Duluth Saturday evening in front of a season-high crowd of 1,812 in McCown Gymnasium.
Kyle Bauman led the Warriors with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting – including 3-of-5 3-pointers – along with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Riley Bambenek added one of his best performances of the season with 17 points on the strength of a 5-of-9 showing from behind the arc and dished out a game-high six assists without a turnover. Mark Blacklock added 10 points and seven rebounds.
Bauman hit a 3-pointer on the opening possession and the Warriors led from start to finish as the Warriors shot the ball well from long range for the second straight night. After sprinkling in 3-pointers from Conrad Masberg, Bambenek and Blacklock, the Warriors jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead and forced an early Bulldog timeout. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Bambenek a few minutes later pushed the lead to 24-13 and the lead would stick in double figures the rest of the way. Blacklock hit 3-point play and a pair of Bauman free throws capped off a 15-4 run for the Warriors as they'd lead 41-24 at halftime.
A quick run from the Bulldogs to open the second half again cut the lead down to 11, but Bambenek hit another 3-pointer that sparked a 9-2 run and at the 12:20 mark Bambenek hit yet another triple that upped it to a 20-point advantage at 57-37 and WSU was on cruise control the rest of the way to the 81-60 win.
Impressively, the Warriors dished out a season-high 22 assists on 29 made baskets while the Bulldogs managed just four. The Warriors also outrebounded UMD by a 39-27 margin and the Warriors turned over the ball just 10 times.
Winona State (12-10, 11-7 NSIC) plays its final home regular season games next weekend when it welcomes into McCown Gymnasium Minnesota State on Friday and Concordia-St. Paul on Saturday.
