Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Nagle, Defense Key In No. 10 Warriors' 57-46 Win Over UMD

WINONA, Minn. – Connor Nagle continued her hot streak with six 3-pointers and the NSIC's stingiest defense kept up its strong play as the No. 10 Winona State women's basketball team earned a 57-46 win over Minnesota Duluth Saturday afternoon in front of a season-high 1,174 fans in McCown Gymnasium.

Nagle for the third straight game hit at least six 3-point baskets, going 6-of-8 from long distance and 6-of-9 overall with eight rebounds to finish with a game-high 18 points. The senior also had six 3-pointers in Friday's win over St. Cloud State and tied a career high with seven in a win over Minnesota Crookston last Saturday.

Kayla Timmerman notched her second double-double in as many nights and third of the season with a 10-point, 10-rebound effort. The junior also tied career highs with six blocks and three assists – each for the sixth time.

Tara Roelofs added 14 points with a pair of 3-pointers along with four rebounds and three assists.

The Warriors benefited from one of Nagle's threes immediately, knocking one down just five seconds into the game to strike first. She hit her second a few minutes later to put the Warriors up 8-3, but a 7-0 run put the Bulldogs on top 10-8 with 4:39 left in the first quarter and WSU led by just a 16-14 margin after one period.

The Warriors were unable to gain much separation in the second quarter either, as WSU led by just one, 26-25, with 2:19 left, but another Nagle 3-ball provided the final scoring of the half with 1:53 to play and WSU headed into the break with a 29-25 advantage.

The third quarter proved to be the difference, as the Warriors scored the first 10 points of the half and prevented UMD from scoring until the 5:02 mark. Another Nagle 3 put the Warriors up 36-25 – their first double-digit lead – and led 38-25 after a pair of Alexis Foley free throws. A quick four points from UMD got it back to a nine-point deficit, but that's as close as it'd get as back-to-back 3s from Roelofs and Nagle sparked an 8-0 run to put WSU up 46-29 and later Roelofs and Nagle fueled another 8-0 run and the Warriors had built a 20-point lead at 55-35 by the 5:30 mark in the fourth and cruised to an 11-point win despite a 7-0 UMD run to end the game.

Although the Warriors struggled from the field for the second straight night, shooting just 35.7 percent, it didn't matter as their lockdown defense allowed the Bulldogs to shoot a poor 24.6 percent (17-of-69).

UMD won slightly the rebounding edge at 46-45 aided by a 15-6 margin on the offensive glass.

Winona State (23-2, 16-2 NSIC), which set a program record for conference wins in a season, is one win shy of tying a program record for overall wins in a season (24 in 2008-09) and will get a chance to surpass that mark next weekend when it takes on Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul Friday and Saturday in the regular season home finales in McCown Gymnasium.
