No. 16 Warriors Split On Final Day In Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 16 Winona State softball team split a pair of games on their final day in Florida, falling to Northwood (Mich.) 3-2 in nine innings before posting a 4-1 win over Holy Family.

GAME ONE: Northwood 3, WSU 2 (9 inn.)

With the Warriors and Timberwolves locked in a scoreless pitchers' duel through seven innings, it took an international tiebreaker to settle the score.

With a runner placed on second, Northwood got on the board in the top of the eighth with an RBI groundout. But the Warriors responded in the bottom of the inning as Natalie Kalmes scored on an RBI groundout by Mariah Schultz.

Northwood came up with a pair of RBI base hits in the ninth inning – first a double, then a single – to move ahead 3-1. Reed Karsten singled home Shannon Nelson in the bottom of the inning but couldn't push across the tying run as the Warriors couldn't convert with runners on second and third with one out.

Hanna Lythberg (6-2) suffered the loss despite giving up just one earned run in nine innings along with four hits and only one walk.

GAME TWO: WSU 4, Holy Family 1

The Warriors rebounded with a 4-1 win over Holy Family in the final game of the trip. WSU got on the board in the second inning as a throwing error allowed Jordan Peterson to reach, scoring Tayler Oberman.

Holy Family tied it in the third with an RBI double by Samantha Klem, but the Warriors used a three-run fifth inning to pull away. Natalie Kalmes picked up an RBI fielder's choice to score Jamee Schleis, then McKenna Larsen recorded an RBI groundout to score Nelson and Oberman singled home Reed Karsten to push the lead to 4-1 and all the run support Larsen would need in the circle.

Larsen (5-1) earned the complete game win while striking out seven batters, scattering seven hits and allowing just one earned run with two walks.

Winona State (14-4) heads to St. Joseph, Mo. next weekend for six games against MIAA opponents beginning with Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State on Friday, March 18.
