Power Surges Warriors to 6-2, 8-0 Sweep of Wayne State

WINONA, Minn. – The No. 15 Winona State softball team blasted four home runs en route to a doubleheader sweep of Wayne State Tuesday in its home openers at Alumni Field in Winona. The Warriors earned a 6-2 win in game one before shutting out the Wildcats 8-0 in game two.

GAME ONE: WSU 6, Wayne State 2

It was the Wildcats that benefited from the long ball first, as Emily Chandler hit a third inning solo home run to break a scoreless tie, but the Warriors would answer with two home runs in the bottom of the inning – a two-run shot to left center from Reed Karsten followed by a solo homer to left by Paige Keegan to put the Warriors up 3-1.

Allyson O'Herron extended the lead in the fourth inning with an RBI sac bunt, and the Wildcats picked up an RBI groundout in the top of the fifth before an RBI double from McKenna Larsen made it 5-2. The Warriors got one more run in the sixth when a Karsten single up the middle led to a run after a stolen base attempt resulted in throwing errors by the catcher and center fielder to allow the senior to score and up the Warriors' lead to 6-2.

Hanna Lythberg improved to 12-3 in the circle with a complete game victory, allowing just four hits and one earned run throughout seven innings of work whiel striking out a season-high seven batters.

GAME TWO: WSU 8, Wayne State 0 (6 inn.)

Game two was all WSU as Alex Walker (6-2) picked up her second straight shutout. The sophomore scattered just five hits through six innings while striking out one and allowing no runs.

The Warriors scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Natalie Kalmes singled home Reed Karsten with a base hit to left field. Karsten then hit a three-run home run to left center in the fourth inning – her second of the game – to up the lead to 4-0.

Freshman Lani Van Zyl tacked on WSU's fourth home run of the afternoon with a solo homer to left in the fifth inning before tallying an RBI single in the sixth inning. With the score now up to 6-0, the Warriors ended it early with a two-run single by Allyson O'Herron to claim the 8-0 six inning win.

Winona State (23-7, 5-2 NSIC) is back on the road for the next five doubleheaders, beginning this weekend when it travels to St. Cloud State and Minnesota Duluth for games at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
