CLERMONT, Fla. – The No. 20 Winona State softball opened its Florida trip with a pair of shutouts over Saint Joseph's College and Nyack College. The Warriors won the opener 8-0 over the Pumas before posting a 7-0 win in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: WSU 8, SJC 0
The Warriors scored early and often to cruise past the Pumas. Chelsey Rodenkirch recorded an RBI to put the Warriors on the board in the first inning. Jamee Schleis scored Allyson O'Herron and Reed Karsten singled home Natalie Kalmes in the second inning to make it 3-0.
An RBI triple to reight field from Paige Keegan and an RBI groundout from O'Herron had the Warriors up 5-0 after three innings before a pair of RBI singles from Schleis and Reed Karsten pushed the advantage to 7-0 before Cassie Santiago recorded a pinch hit RBI groundout for the 8-0 win.
Hanna Lythberg pitched a two-hit shutout to improve her record to 5-0 on the season, walking three batters while striking out one.
GAME TWO: WSU 7, NYACK 0
It took until the seventh inning for the Warriors to score in the nightcap, but when it rained it poured as WSU scored seven runs in the final inning to blow past Nyack.
WSU sent 13 batters to the plate in the seven-run inning that began with a Schleis bunt single. A few batters later, pinch-hitter Mariah Schultz put the Warriors on the board with a two-run single up the middle. Reed Karsten then tripled to left center to score two more and McKenna Larsen added an RBI single to center field to make it 5-0. An infield single from Schleis and a Kalmes single to right field stretched the lead to 7-0, the game's final score, as starter Alex Walker sat down Nyack 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.
Walker (1-1), like Lythberg, pitched a two-hit shutout while striking out four batters and walking just one to earn her first career win.
Winona State (9-1) is back in action Sunday, taking on Grand Valley State at 10 a.m. (CST) and Saginaw Valley State at noon in Clermont.
