BISMARCK, N.D. – The Winona State softball team split a doubleheader Sunday against the University of Mary, winning game one 14-5 before a 6-5 nine-inning setback in game two.
GAME ONE: WSU 14, U-Mary 5
The Warriors recorded a season-high 20 hits and tied a season-high with 14 runs to cruise to a 14-5 win in the opener.
Natalie Kalmes picked up an RBI single in the first to give WSU an early lead and the Warriors upped the lead with a five-run fourth inning, getting RBI on a two-run home run by Kalmes and a solo home run by McKenna Larsen after two runs scored on a throwing error to begin the scoring.
The Marauders battled back to cut WSU's lead to 6-5, but in the sixth inning Chelsey Rodenkirch tripled and then scored on an error to bring home three runs and open up a 9-5 lead. The Warriors extended the lead in the seventh, as RBI doubles from Jamee Schleis and Paige Keegan made it 12-5 before RBIs by Larsen and Lani Van Zyl produced the 14-5 final score.
Hanna Lythberg earned the win, giving up five hits and two earned runs while striking out a season-high nine batters.
GAME TWO: U-Mary 6, WSU 5 (9 inn.)
The Warriors appeared poised for a sweep, but a four-run seventh inning brought the Marauders even before picking up the extra inning win to send WSU home with a split.
Reed Karsten and Chelsey Rodenkirch scored on a passed ball and a wild pitch in each of the first two innings to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
WSU upped the lead to 3-0 in the third with a Paige Keegan RBI groundout before U-Mary scored in the bottom of the inning.
A home run from Karsten and a sac fly by Keegan made it 5-1 after five innings of play, but an RBI double in the seventh followed by back-to-back home runs from the Marauders helped tie the game at 5-5 and force extra innings.
The Marauders pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with an RBI double to earn the 6-5 victory.
McKenna Larsen scattered seven hits through four innings while striking out four and giving up just one earned run before Alex Walker entered the game in relief. Hanna Lythberg (15-5) suffered the loss despite pitching 2 1/3 innings without allowing an earned run and surrendering just two hits.
Winona State (27-11, 9-6 NSIC) begins an eight-game homestand Tuesday when it hosts Minnesota State for a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Alumni Field.
