Warriors Rally Late To Salvage Split With Northern State

WINONA, Minn. – The Winona State softball team scored five runs in the sixth inning of game two to stave off a sweep and earn a split with Northern State Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field.

GAME TWO: WSU 6, Northern State 2

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors plated five runs to salvage the doubleheader on the day. After a leadoff flyout, Mariah Schultz and Jordan Petersen came up with back-to-back singles before Reed Karsten walked to load the bases. That set up an 11-pitch at bat by Jamee Schleis, who eventually coaxed a walk to tie the game at 2-2.

In the following at bat, Paige Keegan produced an RBI single to center field to provide the would-be game-winning run and Natalie Kalmes singled up the middle to up the lead to 4-2. With Northern State using its third pitcher of the inning, WSU pushed across two more runs with RBI singles by McKenna Larsen and Lani Van Zyl to make it 6-2.

The Warriors scored first in the game with an RBI groundout by Allyson O'Herron, but the Wolves answered with a two-run single to take a 2-1 lead before WSU's comeback.

McKenna Larsen (9-3) picked up the complete game victory, scattering seven hits while allowing a pair of earned runs with two walks and a strikeout.

GAME ONE: Northern State 7, WSU 0

The Warriors managed just three hits to find themselves on the losing end of a 7-0 game one loss. NSU jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning before tacking on three more in the fifth and a run in the sixth.

Hanna Lythberg (15-8) suffered the loss, allowing six runs – three earned – in 4 1/3 innings of work. Alex Walker in relief allowed two hits and one earned run in 2 2/3 innings.

Winona State (30-14) hosts Augustana Wednesday for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. in its final home games of the regular season.
