WINONA, Minn. – The No. 17 Winona State softball team suffered a pair of setbacks Sunday, falling to Minnesota Duluth by scores of 3-2 and 10-2 in a doubleheader moved to Alumni Field due to weather.
GAME ONE: UMD 3, WSU 2
The Warriors went yard twice, getting a leadoff home run from Reed Karsten and a fourth inning shot from Paige Keegan to give WSU leads of 1-0 and 2-1, respectively, but it wasn't enough as an RBI double in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Bulldogs pulled out the 3-2 victory.
Hanna Lythberg (13-4) picked up the loss, scattering eight hits and giving up three earned runs along with seven strikeouts.
GAME TWO: UMD 10, WSU 2 (6 inn.)
Natalie Kalmes produced an RBI double in the first inning to give the Warriors a lead that would hold until the fifth, when WSU extended its lead to 2-0 on an RBI single from Reed Karsten.
But the game got away from the Warriors in the bottom of the fifth with an 8-run inning helped by six unearned runs and capped off with a grand slam to right field to put the Bulldogs up 8-2. UMD upped its lead to 10-2 in the sixth as a bases loaded walk and a walkoff RBI single gave UMD the six inning 10-2 win.
Winona State (24-10, 6-5 NSIC) travels to Concordia-St. Paul Wednesday for a doubleheader against the Golden Bears beginning at 2 p.m.
